Interactivity is considered indispensable in most if not all learning management systems (LMS), according to Helen Geiger of Prometheus Training, LLC. But can the degree of interactivity afforded by a particular LMS be assessed at this point in time? To the author’s knowledge, there is no instrument or paradigm that can be used to measure or assess the levels or quality of interactivity in an LMS package.

This paper attempts to synthesize known concepts and perspectives of interactivity using the qualitative approach, to come up with comprehensive criteria for a systematic assessment of the interactivity of LMS packages. The application of these criteria is intended to help improve current learning management systems, including the identification of shortfalls or gaps in these systems.  With a more organized and systematic perspective of interactivity, LMS developers and institutions using these systems can customize their LMS packages to allow for a more effective and efficient learning experience for students utilizing the e-learning platform.

Key words: interactivity, paradigms, criteria, LMS, assessment
